writers and notebooks #amwriting #giftideas #authors

So, I’m going to start with this –

Notebooks…they are like Achilles heels for authors. We find them pretty. We pick them up, look through all the pages, and then waste money on them. Do we waste money on them?

No. We may think so if we don’t actually use them after getting them, but what if an inspirational moment strikes at a random moment? You have a nice notebook at your fingertips.

Nowadays, we’re so lost in our computers and laptops that we forget how good it feels to write in a real notebook with a pen or a pencil. I forgot that myself until one of my author friends got me a leather notebook with a dragon on it. I left the notebook near my computer and decided to spend some of time thinking on what to use it for.

I mean – a dragon notebook! It’s special. You guys know how I adore dragons. I mean there’s even one in my logo!

Yesterday, my best friend messaged me about a children’s book. She said that a friend gifted it for her son. It looked really cool. A couple hours later it clicked.

The notebook had no lines. Just white pages, waiting to be filled. So, why not try to write a children’s story?

Now, I know what you’re thinking. Angelina is a contemporary romance and a paranormal adventure author….but is she a children’s books author?

The answer-

No clue.

But, the notebook is giving me something to try. It allows me to try drawing again. It allows me to think about kids and that I can do since I have a little toddler. I started writing the children’s story yesterday and I’m super excited. Something new. Something different. Something that didn’t come to me when I was staring at an empty Microsoft Word document. It remained empty. But a little motivation from two friends allowed me to try something new.

Wish me luck, guys.

If you’re only writing on a computer or have for years, try writing in a notebook again or at least look at one. You may get an inspiration you haven’t been waiting for.

Does writing speed matter? Does the word amount count? #authorthoughts

Writing speed.

All of us know that it’s not about the word count or at least it shouldn’t stop us from continuing our WIP’s.

We strive to meet the 50k count, 60k, 100k but is it about getting to that number? Or we strive to have a certain amount of chapters and get stressed out as soon as we get to the last one. Did we write in everything we wanted? What if we needed one more chapter but our perfect idea of the amount of chapters didn’t let us add that one more number so we started to break up the chapters in new spots so we would have OUR number.

However, did you stop to think that the original endings for your chapters were perfect? That maybe the readers would want one more chapter and for you to not stick to your rules?

That’s not even the worst of our scary writing process.

Another question is – how many books can one author write per year? Does it matter? If one author writes writes one and another writes three while a third is not even close to finishing one… will some shun one of them or all of them?

All authors write at their own speeds and it’s not about the writing speed but the material.

Nanowrimo is all about the count but when one looks back at their novel after its finished, in December, one may find that the first draft is HORRIBLE. I’m not saying it happens to everyone. But really, when you look back, don’t be surprised if there are a lot of not needed words. A lot of those words will be edited out and replaced. The idea will stay and or even be changed as well in your second draft. Don’t freak out. Know that you did an amazing job with your work but accept that it’s a first draft.

That goes for all of the books you write, whether it be in a month, a year, or years. Don’t focus on the amount of words or how fast you write. Focus on the plot, the characters, and the love you have for your story. Readers don’t look at the count and chances are don’t even think about it. They don’t think about how long it took you to write your work in progress.

Readers want to care about your characters. Readers can feel the love you have for your characters. If they feel it, they will love your books.

Good luck!

What do you guys think?

Publishing Paperback: Createspace versus KDP Select

So, as you guys know – I’m an author, a self-published one through Createspace and KDP Select. Usually, I do paperbacks through Createspace and ebooks through KDP Select and Kobo.

I wanted to create an unbiased experience of using KDp Select for paperbacks. And, boy did I get one.

Here’s the pluses of KDP Select Paperback:

  1. Once you set up the kindle, all info is transferred for the paperback
  2. You can get a free KDP Select isbn for your paperback
  3. You don’t have to toggle between signing in twice to work with the same book
  4. The customer service people are nice and do respond in detail. They get 5 stars

Here’s the minuses of KDP Select Paperback:

  1. It’s a fast set up, just like for kindles but that rush makes you miss things like that it doesn’t have a distribution set up to Barnes and Noble and to libraries like Createspace does.
  2. You can’t approve until you get the cover right. Even if you think the cutting of borders is good, until you get the right measurements, you’ll be trying again and again which can create a bad relationship with your illustrator.
  3. The cover will be DENIED if you have a review on it and a saying that you have another book under you belt. The file contains template text, PDF creation guides, or software references that should be removed. <-Confusing text right? I had to ask them for help because it was really confusing on what it meant. I thought that I had numbers on the cover or text that says – Place Cover title here. Well it means you can’t have a review on the cover. Why? Like seriously? Most authors add a short review. It’s part of the culture. While I was chatting with a helper, I sent in the cover again and this time it was approved and the book got published. What happened? At first, I was happy because it meant that I was done with the hell of publishing. Oh, while Createspace gives you templates for covers, you have to calculate the size of cover in KDP Select. That’s more time consuming and doesn’t actually work.
  4. You cannot buy author copies. If an author wants a copy, they have to buy it through Amazon. The perk of author copies is that you buy them cheap and can give them as gifts and send to reviewers. Plus, it saves the author money. I mean self published authors spend a lot of money on editors and illustrators and marketing. Saving on author’s copies is star sent.

So, my unbiased experiment worked. KDP Select is good for Kindle but not for paperbacks, at least not yet. I’m in the process of deleting the paperback and moving back to Createspace. *Sighs* You guys will just have to wait to get the paperback copy of Follow the Snowflakes.

Good luck with your publishing!

The story happens someplace unnamed close to Chicago, Illinois. Why it is left unnamed? Easy. Because, a story like this can happen anywhere…well as long as there’s snow. ^_^

I live in California, but I have friends living in Chicago. Over the years, we had road trips and or Amtrak trips to see them. I have never been there during winter, only summer, but I really liked my experiences there. Our friends showed us many places and actually one of my first malls in United States was in Illinois.

My life in United States started there, for the first two weeks, we lived with our friends until we moved to California. Well, my father left ahead to get settled while we enjoyed the greenery and a big trampoline at their house. So, Chicago will always be close to my heart.

One of my favorite places is Millennium Park. Check it out here: https://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/dca/supp_info/millennium_park.html

Have you been to Illinois? Where did you visit?

He still wears a wedding band and she’s not sure his heart’s available, even if he makes her heart race. But, maybe he’s a widower? Cat wonders if she should resign herself to being an old maid, or whether she could possibly be the answer to a little boy’s Christmas wish, unless there’s a third option – a future with the stranger.
