Book Review: Sunset Reads (William & Cristina)

Book Title: Sunset Reads (William & Cristina) sunsetreadd

Book Author: D.C.Triana

Source: Received a copy as a gift for an honest review.

Rating: 5 Dragon Paws 5-paws

Sunset Reads is a story about two people falling in love. I do say that William Jameson’s mother was probably dancing up in heaven watching everything unfold, though I do hope that she looked elsewhere on the more private scenes and scenes of people getting hurt. 😉

To be honest, the synopsis for the novel did not grab my attention. It sounded too much main stream but I loved the cover and asked the author if I could read it. Boy, was I happy to read the romance unfold. Yes, there were times when I wanted to take a pause from it because it has long paragraphs, but I did read it in one sitting with some popcorn on the side. Another thing that bugged me was the use of ‘you’re’ when it was supposed to be ‘your,’ but hey typos happen so I focused on the scenes and it was like I watching a movie. Well done!

The pacing was perfect and the novel ended on a good note.

Now onto the characters. This novel has the couple as the main characters of the novel and enough of side characters that helped out the plot. Of course, I hated William’s step-father and guess what? We’re supposed to hate him! ^_^ One of my favorite side characters was Cristina’s brother, Henry. I’m wondering if there will be a novel about him and one of Cristina’s best friends unless I’ve read the hints wrong. The others were good for the story.  Oh, and I found Cristina’s dog, Obi, adorable. I’m very happy that nothing bad happened to Obi in the novel because if it did, I probably would have abandoned reading right then and there.

I did google on how a a white and brown Lhasa Apso looks like and found a lot of very cute dogs. I really want to pet Obi now (though probably the real one because D.C.Triana has her own Obi. So cute!

I highly recommend to the readers  (18+ years) who love slow  romance that turns steamy.

Book Review: Remembrance

Book Title: Remembrance (A Mediator Novel) rem

Book Author: Meg Cabot

Source: Bought from Barnes and Noble

Rating: 5 Dragon paws 5-paws

Me Cabot did not disappoint!

I was in high school, when I first started reading “The Mediator Series” by Meg Cabot. During free period, I would visit the school’s library, find a good book to read and spend time reading. After reading the series during free period, I bought all of the books and since then have been re-read twice.
To tell you the truth, I was really afraid that Suze and Jesse would not be the same… because Miss Cabot haven’t written them in what feels like ages to me. However, Suze still curses, loves boots, and kicks ghost ___ (fill in the blank). Jesse is still old fashioned, in love with his quireda, and wants to murder Paul. I did think that there would be more of Gina, so on that note, more of Gina would have been better.
I really like that finally Suze and Jesse can be together. That it is about finally feeling alive for Jesse and know that everything is as should be.
The twists and turns in this novel, kept me flipping through the pages and wanting to know if there will be something new at the next corner. I feel sad for Dopey because well, if you read the book, you will know what I am talking about. It was nice to read about the grown-up Doc and was a surprise to see his umm interests. Also was nice to see that pets are alive and well. I almost forgot to mention Father Dominic. Boy, was I biting my nails and hoping that the old man would survive what happened to him. I’m so happy that Miss Cabot chose to save him. Well done!
If you haven’t read “The Mediator Series,” I recommend for you to go online or to your local bookstore, buy all the books and start reading. From my perspective, these series is what ghost stories should be about- Mediators and sexy accented young men.

Shortening sentences

One of the most reoccurring problems for writers is that we want to be colorful with our words. We like thinking about each sentence, adding descriptive words and sometimes words that the reader may need a dictionary for. However, we forget that it’s not just about the words, but also about the sentence structure. So my question is:

What are the unnecessary words that pop up in our writing that we can get rid off?

Here are some examples of what I mean:

I want to fall in love with a man who is honest.

unnecessary words (in this case wrong wording): a man who is honest.

New sentence: I want to fall in love with an honest man.

Mike reached out with his hand for his iPad.

Unnecessary words: with his hand (we know that he’s reaching out with his hand. What else can he use?)

New sentence: Mike reached out for his iPad.

Leon got the job in spite of the fact that he was way too early for the interview.

Unnecessary words: in spite of the fact that (Technically you can use it but it’s wordy)

New sentence: Leon got the job although he was way too early for the interview.

That’s your personal opinion.

Unnecessary words: personal (‘your’ is already personal)

New sentence: That’s your opinion.

Mike nodded his head at Brigitte for saying the right thing.

Unnecessary words: his head. (know the definition. You can only nod your head.)

New sentence: Mike nodded at Brigitte for saying the right thing.

I will set my alarm for 3 A.M. in the morning so we won’t miss the train.

Unnecessary words: in the morning (A.M. means morning)

New sentence: I will set my alarm for 3 A.M. so we won’t miss the train.

Each and everyone of you are invited to my game party this Friday at 8 P.M.

Unnecessary words: and everyone (self explanatory)

New sentence: Each of you are invited to my game party this Friday at 8 P.M.

The end result of this argument is that you’re grounded young lady.

Unnecessary words: end (result is an ending to something already)

New sentence: The result of this argument is that you’re grounded young lady.

I hope that this was helpful.

Do you have examples of other unnecessary words?
